Marianna DuLac, held her gun in her hand as she slowly advanced towards the old house. She was a police officer, investigating a case of weapons smuggling; a case none of her male colleagues would help her with. They were all too busy throwing a party for the new guy. She had been left alone at the office while they ran out to the strip club. With nothing better to do, she had started looking over case documents and as one thing led to another she realized that she had discovered the location for a drop. She had grabbed her weapon and headed out.
Now here she was, alone in a dark house with two heavily armed groups converging on this point. She was beginning to wish she hadn’t come. She entered through the already opened door and immediately ducked behind a large couch covered with a white sheet.
The two groups of gangsters were already there. “Come on, come on! Show me the goods,” a young man from one group demanded of the other. No doubt they were small time thugs. The men in the other group, however, seemed big-time. They were dressed in expensive-looking suits. Neither side tried to hide that they were packing heat.
“Oh, very well.” One of the men in suits said. He waved his hand and a meaty enforcer lumbered forward setting a briefcase on the low table between the two groups. The young man greedily opened it, revealing an assortment of weapons, each capable of penetrating Kevlar. She gulped, knowing she had to stop them.
In one fluid motion, she rose and pointed her gun at the greedy young man. “OK, boys, it’s over. Close that case, toss your guns, and let’s go.”
“Why should we?” yelled the young man as he grabbed one of the handguns from the case. Marianna squeezed off one bullet, which struck the young man’s wrist. He cried out and dropped the gun. She swiveled and pointed her gun at the men in suits.
“I mean it! This whole place is surrounded!”
“I think not,” said a thin man in a suit, who was surrounded by the four muscle-bound enforcers. “You came alone; my lookouts would have notified me if we were surrounded. You have no back up, you came here alone, and…” His enforcers lifted their guns. “…you will die that way.”
A resounding voice called from the shadows. “Not if I have anything to say about it!” A great roaring hiss tore from the mouths of a thousand great serpents as they lashed out from behind Mariana, striking and tearing at the throats of the men. The men tried to fight the snakes with their guns but it was no use. Within half a minute, the screams and gunshots ended; all the men were dead.
Marianna spun around and held her gun in front of her. “W-who’s there?”
A woman stepped from the shadows; she was naked and was everything that a woman should be, a perfect union of lines and curves. She seemed to be of no particular ethnicity and her eyes were dark and ancient; they held Marianna’s attention, so much so that she nearly missed the woman’s most striking feature. In place of hair were hundreds of writhing serpents. Before Marianna’s eyes the snakes turned into long strands of blond hair.
“I am Lilith.” She stated.
Marianna gulped. “What are you doing here?”
Lilith’s mouth lifted into a small smile. “The same thing I’ve always done; taking my revenge on the sons of Adam.”
“Why, what did they ever do to you?”
Lilith’s face contorted in anger; then, after a moment, it calmed. “Come,” She said. “I will tell you a tale. A tale of how the first woman was damned to become the Queen of Succubi.”
Lilith sat in an armchair, and Marianna sat on a sofa opposite of her.
“As you can see, I am a woman. Not like the women of today, who snivel and cower beneath the yoke of men, I am the first woman, the true woman. The equal to any man, though I have been denied the right to stand with my husband, Adam. He saw me and any daughter who was born of me as his servant. I was cast out of Eden by God, for he favored Adam. Now I am the Queen of the Succubi, and this is my tale.
“I was born, with Adam, from clay and given the breath of life by God. We were, for the longest time, happy as any mortal might be. We were alike, he and I. We were both strong-willed, and assertive. We were the most perfect creations on Earth. But it was not to last.
As any man, Adam had the urge for sex, and it would be this that drove us apart. Of course this was not our only disagreement, but the sex was the symbol. You see, Adam wanted domination, and he had been given dominion over the whole of the world. Adam believed that because he was the man, the hunter, I ought to be his servant like any other beast of the earth. For a time I tried to ignore his attitude, but soon his arrogance escalated to an unbearable level.
He took me to a secluded field and lay atop me. This he had done before, but this time I stopped him.
“Adam, my love,” I said. “This time I would like to take the top position.” At these words Adam became furious.
“I am the man,” He proclaimed. “I bring the food for you to cook, while you spend your time picking berries; if any is to lie on top, it shall be me.” He stomped away from me.
Late that night, when the moon was full and high, I heard the voice of God speak to me. It said. “You who have denied Adam his rightful position shall be cast from the Garden of Eden for all time.” The wind swirled and leaves whispered, lamenting me or damning me, I could not tell which. Suddenly I was pitched forward by a great wind, and as I landed, I found myself in a great wasteland. I am ashamed to admit that I cried.
I wandered through the wastes for a long time. Then in the distance I saw a great black volcano spewing ash and fire into the sky. I looked behind me to a golden gate and beautiful greenery. Hardening my heart and walked toward the volcano.
When I came upon the Black Gate, I was met by beastly creatures the likes of which I had never known. They led me to a great throne of rock with veins of magma glowing along it. Seated on that throne was The Fallen Angel. He stood on the legs of a goat and had great black wings and curling horns on his face. From the waist down, he wore a red skirt, and on his chest was a cuirass of the brightest gold marred by soot.
He stood and walked toward me; he put his hands on either side of my face and searched my eyes. Then he turned away from me and addressed those gathered around. “My servants,” he said. “Our Queen has finally arrived. All hail Lilith, Queen of Hell!” As he spoke, the demons roared in adulation.
For several years I reined in Hell. Only one other was more powerful than I, my King Satanael. I had already eaten from the Tree of Life, thus I was immortal, and I began amassing even more power. But even in Hell, a man held authority over me, so I left Hell with my daughters, the Succubi, and went out to terrorize the world.
My first attack on man came with the birth of Nero. Throughout his lifetime I twisted his mind and drove him insane. I put it into his head to burn Rome and attack the Jews and Christians. Later I assisted in the fall of Rome itself and plunged the world into the Dark Ages. Then, when society began putting itself back together, it was I who sent the rats who carried the plague. Even later, in the guise of Eva Braun, I planned World War Two. Most recently, I planned the attack on the World Trade Center and Americas recent trouble with Korea.”
Lilith smirked. “And now I will destroy the world, with the very weapons that men have built.”
Marianna was gripped by fear as the words of this woman sank into her mind. “How” She gasped. “How could anybody do… what you’ve said?” She stood shakily and pulled out her gun. “You’ve killed so many people. How can you even sleep at night?”
Lilith smiled almost lovingly as she said. “I don’t sleep.”
She walked to the door. “You’re a strong woman, Marianna. Join me, as many have before, I will give you power and protect you from the holocaust to come.”
Marianna brought her gun around. “I can’t let you leave. I can’t let you kill any more people.” She pulled the trigger, and Lilith staggered.
Lilith turned around and unleashed a high pitched roar. Her long hair became a writhing mass of serpents, her nails grew long and dark, and great black wings erupted from her back. “You stupid bitch!” She lunged for Marianna, grabbing her around the neck and slamming her against the wall.
Marianna choked and dropped her gun. She wrapped her hands around Lilith’s wrist. Tears began to form at her eyes. “P-please stop.” But the demoness had no intention of stopping. After all, what was one more dead human? As Marianna’s hands slipped from Lilith’s wrist, shadows threatened the edge of her vision.
Half-unconscious she opened her mouth to curse Lilith, but her words came out so gargled that they didn’t even sound like English. “Snvi snsvi smnglof” Lilith’s scarlet eyes widened and her entire body recoiled from Marianna.
“What!” She screamed. “How dare you! How dare you speak those names?!” She turned and ran, wings flapping she took to the air and burst through the doors. Suddenly a great force struck her down. As she staggered to her feet, white and gold light enveloped her, and with one more scream Lilith vanished.
Three beings of pure light appeared before Mariana. They had great glowing wings on their backs and their faces were shrouded within the hoods of their cloaks.
“Marianna,” They said as one, “Forgive us for manipulating your words, but you faced the greatest demoness. Your valor shall be recorded within the great libraries of Heaven.” They stopped a moment as if they were being spoken to. “You have been named the mortal protector of earth against the forces of Hell. Lilith will return for her vengeance, she always does. We shall assist you when we must.” Then just like a dream, the three angels vanished.
Now here she was, alone in a dark house with two heavily armed groups converging on this point. She was beginning to wish she hadn’t come. She entered through the already opened door and immediately ducked behind a large couch covered with a white sheet.
