I slid into the passenger seat of Uncle Johnnys' red hot sportscar. "Thanks for giving me a ride, Uncle Johnny." Uncle Johny grumbled something unintelligable. "Yeah fine, just don't call me uncle, it was cute when you were a kid but now it just makes me feel old."
The garage door slid open and, as was his style, Uncle Johnny revved the engine and took off at a speed that was not only illegal but possibly detrimental to the car. I drew in a sharp breath, not really expecting him to go that fast in the morning.
Of course, one does not talk to Johnny Storm early in the morning but that doesn't mean the ride passed in silence. The roaring of the engines, the honking of horns, and the screaming of pedestrians gave off plenty of sound to fill the void.
We pulled up to the school and, as usual, a crowd gathered and girls ooh'd and ah'd. Normally Johnny would have gotten out of the car and eaten it up. But today he locked the doors.
He looked at me in an entirely serious manner. and when Johnny Storm is serious you know you need to listen. "Look, kid, don't let what your dad said yesterday get to you. You're a really cool kid and you don't have to be a genius to get through life. Trust me on that."
I couldn't help but smile just a little bit. "Ok, and thanks Unc... uh.. Johnny."
He reached over and mussed my hair. "Don't mention it, your dad can be a prick sometimes."
I grabbed my bag and slid out of the car and walked through the croud to get to the school. Behind me I heard Johnny. "OK, who wants to see what this baby can do!"
I walked down the hallway to my first hour class, Physics. I actually did pretty well in that class, I was passing at least.
"Hey, Franklin, wait up." My heart pounded in my ears as Vincent caught up and slung an arm around my shoulders. "Were ya headed?"
Ensorceld as I was by his smell, it took me a minute to figure out the answer. "Uh.. Physics..."
"Cool, so you wanna start work tonight?"
I licked my lips and my heart pounded so hard that I was sure he'd feel it. "Sure..."
"Cool," His arm slid off my shoulders. "I'll meet you by my car once schools out." He waved. "See ya, Franklin." Then ran off.
