((Warning: Book has some adult themes))
Ever since I got into manga I rarely sat down to actually read a book that only had text (manga novels don't count, they have pictures). The books I found interest in were few and far between, that is until while perusing the yaoi shelf at Mo Iikai I discovered a book by R. W. Day titled A Strong and Sudden Thaw.
The cover was simple, plain white with what looks like watercolor dragons and a tree. Not much to speak of but I was curious to see why it was on the yaoi shelf.
The header on the back was "Dragons in Virginia?" which kinda threw me, thinking this was some odd fantasy novel based on our planet and not some distant land.
As it turns out it takes place in a time in the future after a second Ice Age. People have turn to their roots and civilization brought down to something along the lines of early 1800's.
The main character, David, is a 16 year old farm boy just starting out with the whole adult thing. He meets the town healer's apprentice, Callan and they quickly become friends. The book hints at a relationship left and right and you'd clearly have to be naive not to see it (or you never read the synopsis on the back of the book). The controversy stems from the fact that any sort of homosexual relationship is a felony by that time's laws.
Not gonna give away plot points, but I read this book in one sitting and it's over 300 pages. Those who know me well know I hardly sit still that long.
What drew me in was the way it was written. It's written like all my dad's family speaks, like a hick. Not so bad that you can't understand what's going on, but it immerses you in the way their lives are.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys non-conventional romance (-cough- EmAnthony -cough-) and if you want I'll let you borrow it!
